Guided Cinque Terre Tour or Go Alone? A Small-Group Day from La Spezia Compared
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
Do it yourself if you have a full day, are happy to read a timetable and want to choose where to linger; book a guided tour if you are on a cruise with a fixed return time, travel with people who dislike planning, or want the villages explained. The trains make independent travel easy here, so the case for a guide is about time and ease rather than access.
What a guided day from La Spezia looks like
The tours listed on GetYourGuide mostly follow the same pattern: you meet at or near La Spezia, take the train and visit three or four villages in about a day. Vernazza, Monterosso and Riomaggiore appear most often.
- The shore excursion to Cinque Terre by train is a 7-hour trip from the La Spezia cruise terminal, accompanied by a tour leader, from €59. It has 1,348 reviews and 4.1 stars.
- The small-group tour with limoncino lasts 8 hours from €72 (693 reviews, 4.4 stars) and visits Vernazza, Monterosso and Riomaggiore with a guide.
- The Cinque Terre tour and limoncino by train takes 7 hours from €72 (205 reviews, 4.5 stars), with Manarola left as a self-guided stop.
- The guided hiking tour runs 7.5 to 8 hours from €80 and has 44 reviews with 4.0 stars.
- The Cinque Terre Premium tour with a local guide costs from €185 for 8 hours and covers all five villages by train; it has only 6 reviews, so the rating tells you little yet.
Notice what the listings do not say: group sizes, whether the train tickets or any park card are included, and how many minutes you get in each village. Those are on the booking page, and they decide the value more than the headline price.
The honest cost comparison
On your own, the transport side is a Treno card at €22 to €35 for an adult day, or single train tickets (the La Spezia–Riomaggiore ticket is listed from €3.11), plus lunch. The guided tours above start at €59 to €72. The difference buys you an organised schedule, a guide, and someone who deals with the return time. It does not necessarily buy you more villages: a group follows a fixed schedule, so check how many minutes each stop gets before you compare it with a day you plan yourself. How the cards work is in Cinque Terre by train from La Spezia.
Who gains most from a guide
- Cruise passengers who must be back at the ship. Ask the operator what happens if a train is delayed and how the tour gets you back to the terminal on time.
- People who want context: the terraces, the history of the villages, which paths are closed this week.
- Visitors who find it stressful to change trains and read signs in a language they do not speak.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who wants the paths. A guided train tour mostly covers villages, not trails, and path status is changeable; see hiking the Cinque Terre.
- Anyone who wants to linger for lunch in one village. A group moves on at a fixed time.
- Travellers who want to see the villages from the sea; a boat day is a different format, compared in Cinque Terre by boat or train.
Small group, private or neither?
A small group is not the same as a private tour. If the group matters to you, a private day is listed on the private Cinque Terre tours page, with prices from €145 for the category, which is a very different budget. All the train-based options are collected on our Cinque Terre by train page.
