Cinque Terre from a Cruise Ship at La Spezia: Shore Excursion, Train or Boat?

On a cruise stop in La Spezia, a booked shore excursion is the safest way to see the Cinque Terre, and going alone by train works if you leave early, keep a margin and know your ship’s departure time. The villages are a short train ride away, but the walk to the station and the return leg eat into a port day more than most people expect.

What the day looks like

Cruise ships dock at La Spezia. The station, La Spezia Centrale, is roughly 2 km from the cruise terminal; reports from cruise passengers put the walk at 25 to 30 minutes, and a taxi from the terminal area is quicker, depending on traffic. From there the trains run to Riomaggiore in about 8 minutes and to Monterosso in about 20, according to the GetYourGuide ticket listings. Check the real timetable on Trenitalia.

Your own cruise line sets the time you must be back on board. Use that time from your daily programme, not an estimate, and work backwards.

Option 1: a shore excursion by train

The shore excursion to Cinque Terre by train starts at the La Spezia cruise terminal, lasts about 7 hours and is accompanied by a tour leader. It costs from €59 and has 1,348 reviews with an average of 4.1 stars. The listing names Vernazza, Monterosso, Riomaggiore and Manarola. The small-group tour with limoncino is 8 hours from €72 (693 reviews, 4.4 stars), which can be too long for a short port call, so compare it with your ship’s schedule.

What the listing does not tell you, and the booking page does: how many minutes each village gets, and what the operator does if a train is delayed. Ask before you book.

Option 2: a boat trip

Seeing the villages from the water also fits a port day. The boat trip from La Spezia with free time ashore takes 3 to 4 hours from €120, with 933 reviews and 4.8 stars; the listing says you explore Monterosso al Mare on land. The most reviewed boat day is longer: the Cinque Terre tour by boat runs 8 hours from €69 (3,541 reviews, 4.5 stars). For a short call, the Portovenere and three islands boat trip lasts 1.5 to 2.5 hours from €69 (438 reviews, 4.8 stars) and does not go to the five villages at all; see Portovenere and the three islands by boat.

Boats stay in port in rough sea. Ask what the operator does if the trip cancels on a day you cannot move. The comparison of formats is in Cinque Terre by boat or train.

Option 3: Pisa and one village

The shore excursion to Pisa and Cinque Terre lasts 8 hours from €60.30 (172 reviews, 4.2 stars). According to the listing, you see the Leaning Tower and spend time in Manarola. It is a long day for one village; if the Cinque Terre are the point, one of the options above gives you more of them. Pisa on its own is on our Pisa day trips page.

Going alone from the ship

Independent travel works if you accept the risks:

  • Leave the ship as early as the programme allows and head straight for a train.
  • Pick one or two villages, not five. Monterosso or Vernazza are the easy ones; see which village to visit.
  • Decide on a train back in advance that leaves at least an hour before you must be on board, to cover a delay or a long walk.
  • Trains and cards are explained in Cinque Terre by train from La Spezia.

Which one to book

  • First time in the area, a fixed deadline: the shore excursion by train.
  • You want the coast from the sea and the stop in one village: the boat trip with free time ashore.
  • You like to plan: go alone, with the margin above.

Whether the ship waits for a delayed tour depends on the cruise line’s own terms, and an excursion bought elsewhere may not be covered, so ask your cruise line before you book.
