Which Cinque Terre Village Should You Visit? Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola or Riomaggiore
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
If you only have time for one village, choose Monterosso for a beach day, Vernazza for the classic harbour and Manarola for the view of the houses; Corniglia is the one to skip first, and Riomaggiore is the easiest to reach. The five villages are close together, so the real question is what you want from the day, not which one is “best”.
The villages in the order the train meets them
Coming from La Spezia, the train stops at Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. The GetYourGuide listing for the La Spezia–Riomaggiore ticket gives the ride as 8 minutes; the Monterosso ride is listed at 20 minutes. Timetables are on Trenitalia, and how the cards work is in Cinque Terre by train from La Spezia.
- Riomaggiore is the first stop and the closest to La Spezia. It is the village to pick if time is short: you arrive after a few minutes, and the harbour area is small enough to see in an hour.
- Manarola is the second. It is small, with a tiny harbour; many visitors come for the view of the houses stacked on the rock, which is often photographed late in the day.
- Corniglia is the only village not on the water. The station sits at the bottom, and the village is up a staircase of roughly 380 steps; a park bus also runs up, which the cards cover. It is the quietest of the five, with no harbour.
- Vernazza has the small natural harbour that appears on most postcards. It is a popular pick for a first visit, so expect company.
- Monterosso al Mare is the largest village and the only one with a proper sandy beach, with sunbeds and umbrellas for hire. It is also the flattest, so it suits anyone who dislikes climbing.
Which village for which day
- A beach day: Monterosso. The other four have rocky swimming spots at best, so bring water shoes if you swim elsewhere.
- One village, one hour, no stress: Riomaggiore, or Manarola if you want one more stop.
- A first visit with photos: Vernazza early in the morning, before the day-trippers arrive, then back south.
- Anyone who finds stairs hard: Monterosso. Do not rely on the others being easy; ask the park or your accommodation about the specific route, because paths and lifts change.
- Wine and terraces: the hills above Vernazza. The heroic vineyards hike with wine tasting takes 3 hours from €58.50 and has 172 reviews with 5.0 stars.
Seeing all five without choosing
A boat shows several villages in one trip, because they sit on one stretch of coast, though not every tour passes all five. The most reviewed option is the Cinque Terre tour by boat from La Spezia, 8 hours from €69 (3,541 reviews, 4.5 stars), which stops at Monterosso and Vernazza and includes a swim stop. For a shorter outing the Monterosso day or sunset boat tour lasts 2.5 to 3 hours from €63 (708 reviews, 4.9 stars). The listing for the Riomaggiore sunset boat tour says it passes all five villages, 2.5 hours from €82.50 (164 reviews, 5.0 stars). Which format is better for you is compared in Cinque Terre by boat or train; all boat tours are on our Cinque Terre boat tours page.
Seeing them on foot
The coastal path links the villages, but sections close after landslides and in bad weather, so do not plan the whole day around one stretch. Read hiking the Cinque Terre before you go, and check the park’s notices on the day.
Honest limits of this comparison
Crowds depend on the season, the weather and the cruise-ship calendar, not on the village alone. A village that is calm on a Tuesday morning can be packed on a Saturday afternoon. The pace also differs from what a photo suggests: expect lanes, steps and queues for the train at busy times.
If you would rather have someone else manage the day, see guided tour or go alone.
