Where Should You Stay for Cinque Terre: La Spezia or One of the Villages?
Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read
For most first-time visitors, stay in La Spezia if price, luggage and onward travel matter; stay in a village if quiet mornings and evenings are the reason for your trip. Monterosso is the easiest village with bags, while Vernazza or Manarola give you the strongest after-hours atmosphere. Do not choose La Spezia expecting a romantic Cinque Terre night, and do not choose a cliffside room without checking the exact route from the station.
Choose La Spezia for an efficient base
La Spezia is the practical answer for a short trip. Mainline trains arrive there, the Cinque Terre trains leave from the same city, and you have more restaurants, supermarkets and conventional hotels. It also avoids carrying a suitcase through a steep lane after a crowded regional train. The trade-off is simple: you sleep in a working port city, not among the terraces and painted village houses.
This base particularly suits travellers arriving late, leaving early, or combining the Cinque Terre with Pisa, Genoa or another Ligurian stop. Check the address as well as the words “La Spezia”: a room near La Spezia Centrale is more useful for village hopping than one far across town.
Choose a village for the hours day-trippers miss
Staying inside the Cinque Terre buys you time, not necessarily convenience. You can walk to a viewpoint before the first busy trains arrive and have dinner after many excursion groups have left. That difference is most valuable on a trip of at least two nights; for one night, changing trains and moving luggage can consume much of the benefit.
Monterosso is the gentlest choice with luggage because it has the broadest flatter areas and a beach. Vernazza puts you beside the harbour but has many steep approaches. Manarola is compact and atmospheric, yet rooms above the main street may involve a sharp climb. Riomaggiore also rises quickly from the station. Corniglia sits above the railway and is the least forgiving choice with a heavy case. Ask the accommodation for step-by-step directions and the number of stairs before paying a non-refundable rate.
The decision by trip type
- One night or an early departure: La Spezia.
- Two or three nights centred on the villages: Monterosso for ease; Vernazza or Manarola for atmosphere.
- Beach time: Monterosso.
- Large luggage, reduced mobility or a pushchair: near La Spezia Centrale, unless a village property confirms a genuinely step-free route.
- A car: leave it outside the villages. A village stay rarely makes the car useful.
Accommodation prices change too much by date and room to quote responsibly. Compare the full stay, including cancellation terms and any transport to the property, rather than treating the cheapest nightly rate as the cheapest trip.
A useful first day from La Spezia
If you choose La Spezia and want the timetable handled for you, the shore excursion to Cinque Terre by train lasts 7 hours from €59, with 4.1 stars from 1,348 reviews. A tour leader accompanies the train journey from the cruise terminal, and the listing names Vernazza, Monterosso, Riomaggiore and Manarola. It is a poor fit if you want slow lunches or spontaneous stops, but a good fit when La Spezia is only a base and you want a complete first look without planning each connection.
Check availability and prices for the train shore excursion
Our recommendation: book La Spezia for a one-night or logistics-led visit; book Monterosso for a village stay with the least friction. If you stay in La Spezia and want one organised overview day, choose the train shore excursion.
